“The Hurt Locker” won top prizes as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association presented its awards today. The film won the award for best picture and best director. It also won five awards in Boston Society of Film Critics voting earlier today.

I was absolutely captured by the magic of the presence of the colors, the fact that they did not inhabit shapes. That interested me very much. The shapes, they weren’t really shapes. They inhabited areas and the areas were approximate. It was, to me, very enthralling. So I wrote Rothko a letter explaining my response to his work, and he told me that he was very touched by the letter, that it meant a great deal to him, that it was the most intelligent sense of a response that he had received to his paintings because, of course, they had been covered by critics. So from the day of that letter forth, we were fast friends. He was always very flirtatious with me. And his relation to certain women was one of you know, the kind of flirtation that’s not intended to lead anywhere, but up in the air is that sense of, wouldn’t it have been wonderful?

Eppure deve esistere una calligrafia delle passioni. Un segno più morbido, una coda della croma che scende di troppo, uno svolazzo di pausa, quella che vale un quarto, una pressione più forte del pennino, quasi un graffio, un oltraggio a quella carta spessa, lanosa, che un tempo si usava per scrivere musica. Si deve pur trovare un barlume di esitazione, la follia di un Presto con fuoco; il restringersi dell’inchiostro in quel breve spazio della pagina, come volesse comprimere il tempo, farlo stare tutto tra quelle righe esitanti e quegli spazi irregolari: cascate di note, le chiamano; gocce d’acqua, qualche volta. C’è persino un suo Preludio, di Frédéric Chopin intendo, che ha questo nome. I nomi che vennero dati dopo: emozionali, descrittivi, talvolta deleteri. A significar la musica come qualcosa d’altro. Grande sbandamento di chi venne dopo i romantici e volle che la natura, l’analogia, entrasse tra quei segni, e li guidasse, quasi fossero i cristalli d’argento di un dagherrotipo.

Kafka sulla spiaggia – Haruki Murakami (Einaudi)

Mi ha fatto lo stesso effetto di La città incantata, il film di Miyazaki: un’incursione in un mondo e in un sistema di simboli che, da occidentale, non riuscirò mai a penetrare completamente e che, proprio per questo, ha una qualità magica e “sospesa” che lo rende ancora più affascinante. È da un lato la storia della fuga da casa di un ragazzo quindicenne e delle persone che incontra, dall’altro quella di un signore dotato di straordinari poteri e della sua “missione” per salvare il mondo. Ma tutto è immerso in un’atmosfera onirica, in cui le cose più straordinarie avvengono con la massima naturalezza e, quasi, con grande serenità. Finire il libro è quasi come risvegliarsi da un lungo sogno.

This is a propaganda short directed by Michael Powell in 1941. Kind of timely in the wake of Remembrance Sunday. The text, read by John Gielgud, comes from a genuine letter, we are told, written by an English airman to his mother to be delivered in the event of his death.
It’s of great historic interest, but of cinematic interest too, not only for the filmmaking contained therein, but for the obvious influence this piece had on the opening of A Matter of Life and Death. As with that feature, the dog-loving Powell stars his own spaniel in the piece (or so I assume - those are certainly Powell’s dogs playing Roger Livesey’s pets in AMOLAD). And the voice introducing the letter is Powell’s own distinctive nasal twang.

1. Take to the Internet: He already has a Livejournal page and he’s releasing new tracks on for free on the web, why not go one better and get yourself a snazzy music portal. With Billy’s reputation, something slick and informed could be a fresh alternative to Pitchfork. And look at all the good it’s done for Courtney. She no longer lashes out at people in public now that she can do it on Facebook!
2. Try TV for a Change: Sonic Youth’s appearance on Gossip Girl might have been the best thing they did in a while (we bought the tracks on iTunes, and they rule!), and Liz Phair has a great second career doing the music for 90210 and Swingtown (RIP). There’s nothing wrong with writing a few theme songs if it will keep you from having Tony Romo’s sloppy.
3. Call Dave Grohl: He was the only one to rise out of the ’90s grunge rock to be even bigger this decade and he still manages to be pretty great, even if the Foo Fighters aren’t as relevant these days. Get in on one of his next side project. With a track record that includes Queens of the Stone Age and the new Them Crooked Vultures, there’s gotta be a place for you somewhere.
4. Go to Movie Premieres: That’s what Michael Stipe does. This summer he was taking inappropriate pictures of himself in a bathroom, but now we saw him at both the A Single Man premiere and later this week at the soiree for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. You get a free movie and to hob nob with fancy, famous ladies. But be careful, Courtney might be there - but only if there’s a good gift bag.
5. Dancing with the Stars: Now come on, it wouldn’t be so bad. In fact, it might be so bad that it will qualify as some sort of James Franco on General Hospital performance art type thing. We bet Billy can do a great cha-cha-cha, and he could lose a few pounds. And bagging Chelsea Hightower is a much better feat that going one-on-one with serial dater Jessica Simpson.
